By 2017, Google will use 100% renewable energy for its operations, including its computer data centers. According to their plan, this target should not be reached until 2025.
Google is ahead of its schedule. The technology giant had initially planned to power its operations with 100% renewable energy from 2025. Finally, it will be as from next year, announced the firm.
This covers the electricity needs of its offices around the world, but also its very hungry computer data centers. To achieve this commitment, Google will directly purchase electricity generated from solar and wind and cover all of its consumption.
“And we are focused on creating new energies from renewable sources, so we only buy projects funded by our purchases,” says Google’s vice president of technical infrastructure, Urs Hölzle.
If Google is moving towards 100% renewable energy, this is not only due to a concern for the environment. The savings achieved are also a driving force in its decision. The cost of wind energy has dropped by more than 60%, which explains why the giant has accelerated in this sector.

Google is not alone in the race to fill up renewable energy in 2017. A global campaign to promote the 100% use of renewable energies in the business world includes Ikea, Facebook, Starbucks and Johnson & Johnson.
